The Stonefly- Life Cycle Overview and Fly Suggestions
Habitat
Need clean, well oxygenated water to thrive. Found mostly in fast moving currents, rapids, riffles of rivers.
Technique
Drift it naturally to mimic free floating nymphs.
Size up big in summer (#5-#10) and use weight when necessary, to get nymphs down deep.
Hatch
Spring - Summer
Year-Round: Nymphs
Stonefly hatches are unpredictable, often occurring during late spring - early summer. Nymph casings on shore rocks indicate the hatch is on and flies will start hitting the water to lay eggs when warmer, hotter days appear.
Stonefly Stages & Fly Suggestions
Stonefly Nymph
Can live for several years and get much bigger vs Mayflies (also have 2 tails vs. 3); will float freely when not under a rock. When ready to emerge, they attach to rocks and molt into a fly.
Stonefly Adult Fly
Only hatch during certain times of year, making them much less important vs. nymphs for fishing. Large, flat wings cover the top of their body. Live for a few weeks near water and drop eggs when days warm up.
